The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program is a newly established "Status of Residence" in Japan, designed to meet the country's growing need for skilled foreign workers across a variety of industries. This program allows foreign nationals to work in Japan in sectors facing severe labour shortages. The program also encourages workmen to contribute to their home country upon returning through their valuable experience of working in Japan.
The SSW program has two main categories, SSW (i) and SSW (ii), each with distinct features regarding skill level, period of stay, and family accompaniment. The table below breaks down the details of each category:
The SSW program is targeted at individuals over the age of 18, who are in good health, and already possess the occupational skills required to work in Japan without needing extensive additional training.
This distinguishes it from other programs, such as the Technical Intern Training, which focuses on teaching skills on the job and contributing to international cooperation from n. If you’ve already completed Technical Intern Training, you may even be able to switch to the SSW (i) status in the same field without needing to take additional exams or tests.
Aspect | SSW (i) | SSW (ii) |
---|---|---|
Target Workers | Individuals who work in jobs that require considerable knowledge or experience in specific industries. | Those engaged in jobs requiring advanced or proficient skills in specific industries. |
Period of Stay | Up to 5 years in total | Unlimited, on a renewable basis |
Skill Standards | Must pass skill exams, but those who’ve completed Technical Intern Training (ii) are exempt. | Confirmed by more advanced exams |
Japanese Language Level | Proficiency in Japanese needed for daily life and work, confirmed by exams. | No language exam requirement |
Family Accompaniment | Not permitted | Family members (spouse and children) may join if certain conditions are met. |
Support | Workers are eligible for support from Accepting Organizations or Registered Support Organizations to help with their transition to living and working in Japan. | Not specified |
Before working in Japan under the SSW program, you need to understand two key concepts: Visa and Status of Residence. While many think these are the same, they are separate steps in your journey to Japan:
